PROTEIN ELECTROPHORESIS
Electrophoresis is a simple, rapid and highly sensitive tool to analyze proteins. The separation of proteins by electrophoresis is based on the fact that charged molecules will migrate through a gel matrix upon application of an electric field.
Polyacrylamide gel matrices are most commonly used to analyze the size, amount, purity and isoelectric points of polypeptides and proteins. Therefore this technique has become the principal tool in biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry and proteomics.
We offer a range of reliable equipment for analyzing proteins by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Systems are available in standard glass plate sizes of 18 x 16 cm and 18 x 24 cm (adaptable to run 18 x 8 cm plates as well), and mini sizes of 10 x 8 cm and 10 x 10.5 cm.
A wide range of accessories and companion products are available to suit your needs.
2-Dimensional Electrophoresis System
NEW Hoefer Complete 2-Dimensional Electrophoresis System offers the highest focusing voltage available for the first dimension and has an easy-to-use, highly reproducible, second-dimension separation tank.
The complete 2D System includes the IEF100 First-dimension Isoelectric Focusing Unit and the SE900 Second-dimension Gel Electrophoresis Unit. The IEF100 will help researchers increase the quality and speed of their IEF separations and the SE900’s single tank design ensures leak free runs and the ability to reuse buffer. The SE900 is also simple to use, utilizes minimal parts and provides efficient cooling.
Hoefer offers two complete 2-Dimensional Electrophoresis Systems, the E2D ELITE that includes the multi-caster and the E2D CLASSIC that does not:
E2D ELITE includes:

Standard Vertical Units
Hoefer offers several standard size vertical units that can run up to four gels simultaneously and accept as many as 112 samples for high throughput analysis.
The instruments of the Hoefer SE600 series are tank systems. Gels are completely immersed in buffer. The systems include a heat exchanger that is suspended inside the lower buffer chamber. The immersion of the gel sandwich in combination with use of the heat exchanger helps maintain the temperature of the gel, producing straight lanes and sharp bands.
The Hoefer SE400 series comprises instruments that can run one or two gels, has a built in caster, fewer parts and is lower in cost. It is ideal for labs requiring many units but possessing limited bench space.
Hoefer also has a wide range of gel casters and accessories to support your vertical electrophoresis needs.
Mini Vertical Units
Separating proteins on small gels is similar to large gels, except volumes and separation times are considerably reduced. Like the large format, gels are cast either two at a time using a dual gel caster or in groups of four to ten in the multiple gel casters.
The combination of fast separations and small size makes mini gels a very popular alternative to standard size gels. Although the separation area is much less, generally resolution remains adequate for most routine procedures.
Hoefer has pioneered mini gel technology for many years and has a wide range of products to suit your needs. The SE260 and miniVE models give you a bigger mini-gel cast in glass plates of 10 x 10.5 cm size. The SE250 can be used to cast and run gels in glass plates of 10 x 8 cm size.
Gradient Makers
Gradient gels resolve a much wider size range of proteins on a single gel. Furthermore, calculating molecular weights is simplified because, unlike single concentration gels, the relationship between log size and mobility is linear over most of the fractionation range of the gel.
Hoefer offers makers made with high impact acrylic and leak-free Teflon™ valves to make casting gradient gels easy and accurate.
